Memorials may become covered with lichen, moss, algae, mildew, biological growth, environmental staining, soil deposits, leaf staining, bird residue, and other buildup that makes names, dates, epitaphs, carvings, and veteran information difficult to read.
The correct cleaning approach depends on the memorial material, age, surface condition, cracks, open joints, inscription depth, previous repairs, coatings, paint, and surrounding conditions. Marble, granite, bronze, sandstone, slate, and repaired memorials should not automatically receive the same treatment.

Gravestone Revival does not use pressure washing, wire brushes, bleach-based shortcuts, harsh household chemicals, or aggressive scraping on cemetery memorials.
Gravestone Leveling & Reset
Soil settlement, grave subsidence, erosion, drainage, roots, frost movement, monument weight, and aging foundations can cause markers to sink, tilt, shift, or lean.
A leaning or sunken memorial should be documented before anyone digs, pulls, lifts, pries, wedges, or adds soil around it. Moving a gravestone without understanding its construction and surrounding conditions can cause additional damage or conflict with cemetery requirements.

Headstone Repair & Stabilization
Older memorials may show cracks, separated pieces, loose joints, failed mortar, movement between the monument and base, unstable components, or damage caused by earlier repairs.
Repair recommendations must account for the material, monument construction, weight, break pattern, surface condition, previous repair materials, surrounding ground, and long-term preservation needs.

Some memorials may be candidates for repair or stabilization. Others may require monitoring, additional authorization, or specialized conservation.
Headstone Letter Repainting
Some granite memorials were originally designed with painted recessed lettering. As the paint fades, names, dates, epitaphs, religious details, and military information may lose contrast even when the granite remains structurally sound.
Letter repainting is appropriate only for eligible memorials intended to have painted recessed lettering. It should not be used to hide stone loss, cracks, biological growth, failing inscriptions, or structural deterioration.
Family Plot Care for Several Generations of Memorials
A family burial area may contain a central monument, individual headstones, paired spouse markers, veteran memorials, footstones, low markers, bronze markers, and later burials added over several generations.
Inspecting only one memorial may leave the family without a clear understanding of the entire plot. Our family plot care service can coordinate the review, cleaning, documentation, and recommended next steps for several related memorials during one cemetery visit.
